We’ve been longtime fans of Oppo’s disc players, but as much as we liked the company’s BDP-83 Blu-ray player, its US$500 price puts it out of reach for most buyers. With that in mind, Oppo has released the BDP-80, a lower priced Blu-ray player that looks to keep much of what we liked about the BDP-83 for only US$290. It’s available today. The easiest way to see the differences between the new BDP-80 and the BDP-83 is to check out Oppo’s comparison chart, but the short story is that it keeps most of the BDP-83’s features, but has a step-down video processor, can’t output DVD at 24 frames-per-second, and it lacks some customer-installation-friendly options like an RS-232 port and IR inputs and outputs.

The Pine Trail platform consists of a 45nm processor and the NM10 Express mainboard. The former might be the first Intel chips to integrate both memory controller and graphics engine together with the CPU on a single silicon. According to Intel, this would not only give the next-generation Netbooks HD-decoding capabilities, but also reduce power consumption by up to 20 percent. Of the three available models, the Atom D450 and D410 are single-core processors made for Netbooks and Nettops, respectively, while the dual-core D510 will only be found deskbound machines. All three models run at a clockspeed of 1.66GHz. In conjunction with this announcement, Asus has also announced its first Eee PC lineup that sports the second-generation Atom platform. The 10.1-inch Eee PC 1005P and 1005PE will sport the 1.66GHz D450 processor and Intel GMA 3100 graphics engine, though the former will have a smaller 160GB HDD compared with the latter’s 250GB HDD.
