In terms of core Blu-ray functions, these Pioneers can internally decode high-resolution Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio surround sound and are BD-Live-ready. The latter requires an external USB storage to be installed for downloading additional movie content. There’re front and rear USB ports to enable both Wi-Fi and BD-Live, but this takes up all the jacks for MP3/JPEG playback from thumbdrives. The premium BDP-LX53 also sports an armored chassis for vibration damping, as well as higher-grade parts. Another key feature for this two players is the firm’s proprietary PQLS technology, designed to minimize jitter in HDMI connection to improve music sound quality.

The company recently began offering up a newer, leaner version of its player that’s essentially the same as the old one in terms of functionality. The big difference is that the player’s timeline nearly disappears after a few seconds of playback, putting more of an emphasis on whatever’s playing. Other small tweaks include a volume knob that slides out into the player’s chrome instead of up and on top of the video, as well as a slight fade to the now white and gray player interface that sits below a clip. This small effect is reminiscent of the fade Google added to its home page back in December of last year.

DivX Plus HD Certification is the premium level of certification available from DivX, optimized for consumer electronics products and supports the playback of all content created with DivX software. Available on www.divx.com, the newly released DivX Plus Software allows users to create and playback H.264 video in an .mkv file container. DivX Plus HD Certified devices will playback all previous versions of DivX video, premium Hollywood content in the DivX format, and DivX Plus HD video files with the .mkv file extension and AAC audio created with third-party tools.
