Then, there’s the flagship BD-C7900, which goes one step further with two HDMI outputs similar to Panasonic’s DMP-BDT350, to support legacy A/V receivers without 3D compatibility.

According to the press release, the full-HD VG10 “marries the best of dSLR and camcorder technology”, which is to say it that borrowed some aspects of the NEX line. For instance, the videocam has a 14.2-megapixel APS-C sized sensor, which is presumably the same utilized in the NEX-5. And as with the NEX digicams, the VG10 snaps 14.2-megapixel stills and captures 1080p (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) movies. The Handycam is also able to use A-mounts and other branded glasses with the LA-E1 or third-party adapters, respectively. By coupling a larger image sensor with the lenses, users can record videos that have shallow depth-of-field for a more cinematic effect. Framing is done via a 3-inch swivel LCD or the pivoting electronic viewfinder. The VG10 accepts both Memory Stick and SD/SDHC media for storage. The Handycam has a stereo microphone, which Sony has dubbed the Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone. According to the firm, this contraption is able to pick up sonics from four omni-directional mics. The signals are then combined by an advanced processing algorithm to deliver clear audio.

Panasonic, for example, will be issuing its first 64GB SDXC as a Class 10, 22-megabyte-per-second version card for almost US$600; however, SanDisk announced its first 64GB card at a slower Class 4, 15MBps for the more attractive price of US$349.99. True, only products announced since January–and only some of those–support the new SDXC standard, but even in a lot of the newer cameras and camcorders, Class 4 is sufficient for video recording. However, that 15MBps speed might slow you down when bursting in a midrange dSLR, which increasingly support SD media. Overall, I think going for the slower, cheaper memory is the right move for most people for now. Furthermore, if you just bought a brand-new, SDXC-supporting device, you can get that extra capacity today.

Digital-camera sales declined in 2009, but the market is expected to return to growth this year, a camera trade group said Tuesday. Total shipments worldwide totaled 106 million, an 11.6 percent drop compared with the 119 million that shipped in 2008. In 2010, the market is expected to edge ahead 3.8 percent to 110 million cameras, the Camera and Imaging Products Association said. As has been the case for years, the market fared better for dSLRs, which offer higher quality, faster performance, and interchangeable lenses but also come with higher price tags and greater bulk. The dSLR market–which in CIPA’s statistics includes Olympus’ and Panasonic’s Micro Four Thirds cameras that have interchangeable lenses but aren’t technically single-lens reflex models–edged 2.3 percent upward to 10 million units shipped in 2009. That market is forecast to grow another 11.1 percent to 11 million units in 2010.

Current Blu-ray Discs can handle 25GB of data per layer, but Sony and Panasonic have developed a new technology to push the capacity to 33.4GB. Both Japanese companies have managed to bypass the bottleneck by implementing enhanced signal processing. Dubbed Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (i-MLSE), the solution is compatible with the blue-violet laser optics found in existing Blu-ray players. Unfortunately, i-MLSE will require powerful hardware for complex calculations that may be beyond the recently launched models, as well as a simple firmware upgrade–the Sony PS3 is a prime candidate with its super computer-grade CELL processor.
