If you’ve watched the science fiction film Avatar recently, you may have noticed one of the characters plucking a display panel from a desktop and continue using it as a standalone control screen. While we probably wouldn’t witness epic wars between human colonists and sapient humanoids in the near future, the technology depicted in the science fiction film is available in our current time, albeit in its unrefined form. At the recent computer graphics event Siggraph Asia 2009, a pair of researchers from the University of Tokyo demonstrated their Volume Slicing Display prototype. Developed for medical use, radiologists would be able to view 3D imagery from a flat X-ray plate via a calibrated projector. The technology essentially lets users experience 3D virtual objects in a physical environment. This could mean visualizing cross sections of your brain in 3D while walking around in an operating theater.

Set up isn’t quite as simple as with some other projectors. The pureshift lens system delivers some flexibility, but we don’t have the control of the visible image that we do with some

rivals. The throw ratio is slightly shorter than similarly priced machines, but it’s still capable of delivering a I50in image from five metres away.
While the HD82 can be installed in the normal array of positions, there is more than a nod to people who want to ceiling mount. Most connections are on the rear of the unit, ensuring a smart-looking top fasica that’s free from buttons or inputs.
While a claimed contrast ratio of 20,000:I and a 680:I ANSI Ilumens brightness rating bode well as is possible at this manual-reading stage of proceedings.
It’s only when we compare it with the class-leading panasonic PT-AE3000- which costs around a lac less- that we’re surprised to see the HD82 struggling.
If yo see the HD82 at a knockdown price, go for it – but at Rs 2,45,000, the competition is too fierce.
